Seasonal Horticulture Maintenance
Summer 2025

 
Starting Pay: $16.00 per hour

Hours and Dates of Employment:
            Monday – Friday from 7:00am – 3:30pm (typ.).
This position averages 40 hours per week for approximately 13 weeks (May – August).
Depending on position/seasonal needs, overtime and weekend work may be required.    

Summary: 
Maintain all parks and properties within the Geneva Park District.  Also assist with Special Events. Must perform other duties, as assigned.

Supervisor: 
Reports to Horticulturist, Assistant Superintendent of Parks, Superintendent of Parks and Executive Director.

Essential Functions:
1. Maintain the landscape of the Park District parks and facilities (grass, natural areas, flower beds, trees, mulching, and other duties, as assigned).
2. Assist with watering and maintenance of new plantings (ornamentals/trees/shrubs/turf/etc.) within the Park District parks and facilities, as assigned.
3. Maintain the facilities and amenities of the Park District parks and facilities (pool, bathrooms, garbage cans, playgrounds, pavilions, picnic tables).
4. Be on time for scheduled shifts.
5. Inspect equipment before use.
6. Clean work areas when finished and ensure facilities are locked. 
7. Adhere to all safety policies and practices.
8. Treat Park District patrons with courtesy and respect.
9. Understand the Park District’s safety procedures and requirements.  This includes completion and follow-through on all accident reports, emergency safety procedures, reporting of hazardous equipment, facilities, or conditions and the conduct of any employees under their supervision.  Report all incidents and potential hazards to the safety committee as soon as possible.

Marginal Functions:
1. Assist all employees of the Park District as needed. 
2. Attend in-service trainings and meetings as directed by Supervisor.
 
Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to operate Park District vehicles and equipment (including zero-turn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, pumps, hedge trimmers, etc.)
2. Handling Park District materials up to 50 pounds. Assistance will be provided when necessary (mechanical or team-lift).

Cognitive Considerations:
1. The Summer Seasonal Maintenance Staff must exhibit good problem-solving ability and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Park District.
2. Exposure to elements when assisting workers with outdoor functions. Some activities are performed indoors; these conditions include lighting and temperature.
3. Resolve differences and problems that arise with patrons and work together with employees.

Qualifications:
Must have criminal background clearance. Must also maintain the ability to communicate effectively with other parks staff. Previous grounds maintenance experience is desired. Must pass physical and drug test.
