Description
Communicating with those who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is a challenge for family members and caregivers. As part of an ongoing effort to support and educate area families and professionals about caring for people with dementia, The Holmstad will host expert and author Daniel Kuhn, LCSW, as he presents “The Language of Dementia,” on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. The Holmstad is a faith-based, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community located at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia result in a variety of communication barriers due to impairments in one’s memory, language, and thinking skills. During his presentation, Kuhn will explain the communication barriers and explain how to overcome them through good listening and speaking skills. For nearly 30 years, Kuhn has focused on dementia care issues and educated others in the field of health and aging. He has authored more than 50 publications, along with the book “Alzheimer’s Early Stage: First Steps for Family, Friends and Caregivers.” He is vice president of education at All Trust Home Care, located in Hinsdale and Deerfield, Ill. The Holmstad also offers a free memory loss support group for caregivers through The Holmstad Helping Hearts, which is offered the first Thursday of the month, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the Town Center classroom. For more information, call (630) 879-4034. Space is limited for this free event. To register, please visit www.TheHolmstad.org or call 877-226-7310. “The Language of Dementia” also qualifies for one continuing education hour for nurses, social workers, licensed clinical professional counselors and nursing home administrators.
